A pattern emerged as I researched and wrote my debut novel, House Key. The research became less about verifying facts and dates, and more about connecting words and images to new ideas and discoveries. I kept thinking that I really wanted my readers to know more about the topics I touch upon, about all the things that inspired me throughout the process of writing. Things I wanted to know more about.
The topics are wide and varied. Random, if you will, but still essential to the story that had to be told. In retrospect, the novel itself turned out to be a collection of backstories. Backstories with stories of their own. As I thought about how to share all this, not just with my readers but with others interested in the same things, I decided a blog was the perfect medium. A perfect way to start a dialog about topics that are unique but cross over into other areas because, ultimately, I’m convinced all things are connected.
The teacher in me sees this as a great way to learn, share ideas, and grow. Unlike a classroom, though, this forum frees us from the lesson plan and lets us explore myriad areas that pique our curiosity in as much depth or breadth as we choose. That said, the best way to start, I decided, is by chapter, as things come up in House Key. I’ll include links for further reading as well as images I’ve found along the way that illustrate ideas that elude words. Please note that I do not own the copyrights to many of these images, but will cite their sources wherever possible. I hope you enjoy BackStory and will contribute your own thoughts and ideas!
