Prologue introduces the historical backdrop and recurring themes in the story through the interactions between two characters, Emaline and King, who reappear in the context of their fuller story later. They reference relevant topics such as slavery, duality of time, forbidden love, and magic. It sets the stage for the conflicts that will surely challenge and fuel the characters’ hopes, dreams, fears, and desires moving forward.
Prologue takes place in a barn.
There’s something special about old barns. Years ago, one of my favorite pastimes was driving through rural parts of New England and upstate New York photographing old barns. It became a habit that never died. Now, living in the south many years later, I still pull over when I’m driving and spot a beautiful barn. I reach for my camera and add a new – old – barn to my collection. So, it was only fitting that the prologue of House Key would open in one of its most intimate settings: the loft of a barn. There is a certain mystique about barns and their lofts that makes me wonder… if old boards could talk, what stories would they tell?
