Becoming by Michelle Obama
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I resisted reading Becoming for months after it was published, concerned that it was overrated after having climbed to best-seller status almost immediately. I admit, however, that once I began reading it, I was drawn in and found the first-person narrative disarmingly authentic. Not only was Michelle Obama’s story compelling, but relatable. There were some early experiences she shared that were strikingly similar to my own growing up, which decades later, I can now revisit in a different light after reading her thoughts on the topics. I learned more about what a truly remarkable woman our former First Lady is, whom I already held in high regard, by reading her journey from youth, career, motherhood, and through the White House years. Becoming is a truly aspirational memoir, not just for women of color, but for all women.
