Ramon Casas: La modernidad anhelada by Ignasi Domènech i Vives
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This catalog (in Spanish) covers an exhibit at Museu de Maricel, Sitges (and later Madrid and Palma) of over 200 pieces of art commemorating the 150th anniversary in 2016 of the birth of Ramón Casas. The authors delve into the life and career of the artist, as well as his role in advancing modernist art in Spain and abroad, while simultaneously exploring his relationships and philosophies. Thoughtfully written and well researched, each section is insightful, such as the attitudes reflected in Casas’s portrayal of gender through his art, for example. The photographs are beautiful and of high quality. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Spanish modernism in art, Casas’s influence upon contemporary artists and many that followed, and particularly, late 19th and early 20th century Catalan artists.
